Shazam!

Shazam! is a 2019 American superhero comedy film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, the Safran Company, and Seven Bucks Productions, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the seventh installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). It was directed by David F. Sandberg from a screenplay by Henry Gayden who co-wrote the story with Darren Lemke, and stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Djimon Hounsou. The film follows teenager Billy Batson (Angel) as he is chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam (Hounsou) to be his new champion by saying the name "Shazam", allowing him to transform into an adult superhero (Levi) with various superpowers. Billy and his foster brother Freddy Freeman (Grazer) must discover Billy's new powers in order to stop the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong) and the Seven Deadly Sins. Development of a live-action Shazam! film began at New Line in the early 2000s, but was delayed for several years. The film went into pre-production in 2009, with Peter Segal as director, John August as writer and Dwayne Johnson being considered to star as the villain Black Adam, but the project fell through; Johnson acts as an executive producer on Shazam! William Goldman, Alec Sokolow, Joel Cohen, Bill Birch, and Geoff Johns, among others, were all attached to the project as writers at various points. The film was officially announced in 2014, with Johnson attached to star as either Shazam or Black Adam. In January 2017, he was cast to lead a solo Black Adam development project. Sandberg signed on to direct Shazam! in February 2017, and Levi was cast that October, with Angel joining the following month. Principal photography began in Toronto on January 29, 2018, with most of the film shot at Pinewood Toronto Studios, and wrapped on May 11. Shazam! was released in the United States on April 5, 2019. The film was a box office success, grossing over $367 million worldwide, and received positive reviews from critics, who praised Sandberg's direction and the performances of Levi, Angel and Grazer, as well as its generally light tone and sense of fun. It was followed by the spin-off film Black Adam (2022) and a sequel titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023), both of which failed to meet the critical and financial success of the first film.

Hi. Um... I was supposed to get off at 30th. Billy Batson. How'd you know my name? I am the last of the Council of Wizards. Keeper of the Rock of Eternity. Oh... You're... that guy. Hey, listen, I don't have any money. Do not patronize me, boy. You are standing in the source of all magic. The Rock of Eternity. Seven thrones of seven wizards. But long ago, we chose a champion and we chose recklessly. He used his power for revenge, releasing the Seven Deadly Sins into your world. Millions of lives were lost. Entire civilizations erased from existence. That is why I vowed never to pass on my magic until I find one truly good person. Strong in spirit, pure in heart. Look, man, maybe this is magic and, I don't know, but the people you're looking for, good, pure people, I'm not one of them. I don't know if anyone is, really. You, Billy Batson, are all I have. All the world has. Lay your hands on my staff. Gross. And say my name so my powers may flow through you. I open my heart to you, Billy Batson. And in so doing, choose you as champion. Thanks. Real sweet of you, mister, but I really gotta get going. My brothers and sisters were slain by the Sins. Their thrones lie empty. My magic must be passed on. Now, speak my name!

The wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. What happened to me? Why am... What did you do to me? What did you do to my voice? You have been transformed to your full potential, Billy Batson. With your heart, unlock your greatest power. The thrones of our brothers and sisters await.

You know, guys, I'm happy to look for Billy. More than happy. But no, you gotta wash the dishes. That's what's more important. "What are you gonna do, Freddy, run after him?" Very funny.

I'm really sad because Billy's gone. And, you know, maybe it's my fault. Maybe I did it. Uh, you know, maybe I snore. Hey, hey, hey. Not your fault, son, all right?

Oh, thank God! Hey. Stop right there. How do I know you're not a supervillain using telepathic abilities to make me believe that you're Billy? Huh? What? All I have to do is press "dial" on this thing. No! No., I have proof. I have proof. Here.
